Detail of release

Small population tables provide census data for usual residents in specific small population groups. For example, usual residents who identified with a particular ethnic group, religion or national identity or usual residents who had a particular country of birth or main language. Due to the small size of the total population in the groups, confidentiality constraints limit the release of more detailed standard statistics.

These datasets are produced only for geographic areas in which the population being counted exceeds a specified threshold. Only the areas in which the population exceeds these thresholds are included in each table. This means that tables do not all contain the same geographic areas, because those exceeding the threshold will vary depending on the population being counted. We advise not to sum figures from the available geographic areas to create figures for higher geographies, since the resulting totals might exclude counts for some of the lower geographies that were below the threshold.

All Small Population datasets

Small Population datasets - part 1

The first set of small population tables provide a breakdown for a total of 34 ethnic group, religion, or country of birth populations by five-year age bands, by sex. Data is given for England and Wales, regions and lower tier local authorities (LTLAs) where there are 200 or more usual residents in that population group.

We also include a small population table for people who identified as ''Valmiki'' through the religion question, the ethnic group question or both the religion and ethnic group questions. This table is provided for England and Wales and has a breakdown by five-year age bands, by sex.

A table is also provided for those who identified as ''Jewish'' through the ethnic group question, the religion question or both the religion and ethnic group questions. This table is provided for England and Wales and all lower tier local authorities (LTLAs) where there are 100 or more usual residents from that population.

Small Population datasets - part 2

The second set of small population statistics provides tables for separate ethnic group, religion, national identity, or main language small population groups. Data is given for England and Wales, lower tier local authorities (LTLAs), or middle layer super output areas (MSOAs) where there are 100 or more usual residents in the population group. The geographies for each small population are detailed below. These cover key characteristics such as age, sex, economic activity status, highest qualification, provision of unpaid care and disability.

Important note

The numbers in the Count columns are stored as text. To carry out numeric operations on these you must first format them as numbers. In Excel, select the cells in the Count columns, then click the hazard icon that appears and then select ''Convert to Number''.

Protecting personal data

Sometimes we need to make changes to data if it is possible to identify individuals. This is known as statistical disclosure control. In Census 2021, we:

More information

Groups not included in this set can be requested as similar outputs through the commissioned table service, for a charge. The creation of ad hoc tables is constrained by the data, by the availability of skilled staff to compile them, by any similarities to what the ONS has already released or plans to release, and the need to protect confidentiality of individuals.
